L.A. Can Have the Rams. We Get Milton Mitchell!
May 31, 2016

City Academy has named Milton Mitchell the school’s Principal beginning July 1, 2016. Mr. Mitchell grew up in Kinloch, MO, but has lived in California for the past fifteen years. He most recently served in administration at the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, CA, just outside of Los Angeles, where he spearheaded the admission process and summer education program for over 800 students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Mr. Mitchell received his Master of Arts in Management and Leadership from Webster University and has a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. For more than fifteen years, Mr. Mitchell has been a pillar in leading, organizing, and advocating for both education and diversity. He has held positions in his community that ensure equity, inclusion, and diversity in independent schools.

After the events of August 2014 unfolded, Mr. Mitchell longed to return home to St. Louis. He watched his community of Ferguson and Berkeley portrayed negatively night after night on national media, dreaming of the day he could return to the community that raised him. Although Mr. Mitchell is familiar with the many challenges that St. Louis faces, he also knows that the region’s greatest attributes are the families, sense of community, and diversity.

“St. Louis is home to me. Anything that has to do with this community pulls on my heartstrings. Having been in California for the past fifteen years and seeing how my neighborhood of Berkley and Ferguson is being portrayed has been very disturbing to me. I know these communities – our communities – are much more than what has been shown in national coverage. I feel a personal responsibility to come back and show the world that St. Louis is so much better, so much greater than what you see on the media. And what better place to do that than at City Academy? I am very excited to show St. Louis in a much different light through the life-changing education that City Academy provides to the community. Let’s get to work.”

City Academy is a leader in the model of exceptional education, bold expectations, and community transformation. Families, faculty, and staff work together as they support students to succeed at City Academy, secondary school, and beyond. Dedicated faculty and staff ensure that a family’s geographic location and income is not a barrier to accessing high quality education.

President and Co-Founder of City Academy, Don Danforth, is confident in Mr. Mitchell’s ability to lead City Academy in being the premier model for urban education. “Milton’s dedication and enthusiasm to our mission and vision are resolute. He brings with him a love of our community, extremely high expectations, and a sincere desire to transform children and the community through education. He is an accomplished educator and administrator, and I am proud to have him on our team.”
