Spanish Language Immersion
November 14, 2016

¡Hola clase !

The Spanish program at City Academy is muy bueno! Every student at City Academy participates in our Spanish program, and each class is structured to best enhance the learning of each grade level.

Emeralda Torres, a native of Peru, has been the Spanish teacher at City Academy for more than eleven years. She structures the program so that junior kindergarten through first grade students learn Spanish through hands-on activities. She teaches early childhood students through spoken word so that scholars recognize objects in their environment in Spanish, as well as how to say every day words in Spanish.

Second graders learn the alphabet and how to write in Spanish, and they sometimes play games such as Bingo in order to help with pronunciation. Third through sixth graders primarily use iPads in the classroom utilizing Rosetta Stone so that they may learn at their own pace. They learn Spanish grammar, sentence structure and more on their iPads.

Another aspect to the program is that all students (regardless of their grade level) learn about the cultures of various Spanish speaking countries. They are introduced to different holidays, beliefs, and wardrobes that may be present in other countries. This offers them the opportunity to obtain a greater level of understanding and open-mindedness towards cultures other than their own.

Ultimately, the goal of our Spanish language program is to immerse our students in Spanish language so that they have a solid foundation when studying foreign language in secondary school and beyond. Our Spanish program provides scholars with a springboard for the future and a newfound sense of the world around them.
